Hydrumedical S.A., a company dedicated to the development and manufacture of medical technologies and devices, began its activity in May 2016 as a spin-off from the I3B's research centre at the University of Minho. Challenged by renowned urologist Prof Dr Estevão Lima, it began developing the first biodegradable ureteral stent. Since then, this innovative product and other products has enabled the company to attract significant private investment, both national, such as Vítor Magalhães from Guimarães, and international, such as Grupo Jacto, a Brazilian multi-sector group founded 75 years ago by Shunji Nishimura, which recently joined the company, enabling it to expand its areas of development and operation.
Hydrumedical it currently focuses essentially on four different areas: urology, ostomy, infection control and, more recently, sports medicine. Bioceramed S.A. initially founded by Eduardo Ascenso Pires under the name Altakitin, is a spin-off of Ceramed Revestimentos which is essentially dedicated to the development, manufacture and commercialisation of biomaterials for bone regeneration. Its product portfolio includes the development of class III medical devices for applications in orthopaedics, traumatology, spinal surgery and dental surgery. Initially based in Loures, Lisbon, it now sees this geographical change as an opportunity to expand its production capacities and respond to the most diverse market needs. This official ceremony was also attended by the distinguished chamber president of Guimarães, who took the opportunity to recognise and congratulate the companies for their research capabilities in the medical field and for transferring this knowledge to the market, as well as for their ability to scale their business in Guimarães, giving preference to this region over other national centres.
